Pre-Demo Qualification Guide

This page helps facilitators prepare the Artemis Edge ACM demo for enterprise customers. The five concerns below recur across virtually every enterprise edge evaluation regardless of industry vertical.

This is facilitator guidance, not a lab exercise. Read it before running the demo for a customer.

Enterprise edge customer concern matrix

Concern 1: Scale evidence (N > 3)

The question: "Does RHACM scale beyond your 3-cluster demo to my hundreds/thousands of sites?"

Vertical Typical scale Why they ask

Retail (stores)

500–5,000 sites

POS, inventory, cold-chain telemetry per store

Manufacturing (plants)

50–500 sites

SCADA/MES integration per facility

Logistics (warehouses)

100–1,000 sites

Sort/scan telemetry per DC

Energy (substations)

1,000–10,000 sites

Grid telemetry per substation

Telecom (cell sites)

10,000+ sites

RAN/vDU workloads per site

What the demo shows: 3 SNO clusters on GCP.
What the customer needs: Reference to RHACM tested scale (3,500 SNOs on 3-node bare-metal hub), Mode 1 vs Mode 2 decision criteria, hub sizing formulas.
Pre-demo action: Ask the customer their target site count. If >1,000, prepare Global Hub (Mode 2) talking points. If >2,500, flag that Mode 2 is likely required.

Concern 2: Policy parameterization for N-site fleet

The question: "Do I need N individual policies for N sites, or can I template one policy with per-site variables?"

Pattern Who asks Why

Same base config, per-site address namespace

Retail, logistics

messages.STORE-{id}.# varies by site

Same operator, different resource limits

Manufacturing

High-throughput plants get more CPU/memory

Same federation topology, different upstream URIs

All

Each site federates to its regional hub

What the demo shows: Helm range .Values.edgeBrokers generates per-spoke policies. Looks like N policies for N sites.
What the customer needs: PolicyGenerator + Kustomize as the production pattern. Hub-side policy templates with {{ fromClusterClaim }} for per-cluster variables.
Pre-demo action: Ask what varies between sites. If only address namespace and hub URI, PolicyGenerator covers it. If complex per-site configs, discuss GitOps per-cluster overlays.

Concern 3: Hardware requirements for physical servers

The question: "Your demo runs on cloud VMs. What hardware do I need at my physical sites?"

Hardware concern Answer

Minimum SNO

8 vCPU / 16 GB RAM / 120 GB SSD (OCP 4.22 docs). 4 vCPU is absolute minimum but leaves no headroom.

SNO + AMQ Broker (practical)

8 vCPU / 32 GB RAM / 120 GB SSD (matches demo n2-standard-8)

BMC requirement

Redfish-capable BMC required for virtual media provisioning. Not all commodity servers have this.

Provisioning method

Assisted Installer (USB, Redfish, iPXE) — NOT Hive on GCP

What the demo shows: GCP n2-standard-8 instances provisioned via Hive.
What the customer needs: Bare-metal minimums, Assisted Installer reference, BMC requirement.
Pre-demo action: Ask what servers the customer has at edge sites (make, model, CPU, RAM, BMC capability). If no BMC, discuss USB-based installation.
Workshop reference: Module 2 (hardware note) and References (SNO hardware section)

Concern 4: Disconnected operation guarantees

The question: "When my site loses WAN connectivity, does everything break?"

Scenario What happens Customer concern

Hub unreachable

Klusterlet enters degraded state but existing workloads continue running. Policies already applied remain enforced.

"Can my broker still accept messages?" → Yes.

Federation link down

AMQ Broker queues messages in local journal (reconnectAttempts=-1). Auto-forwards when link restores.

"Do I lose messages?" → No, store-and-forward.

Extended disconnect (days)

SNO operates autonomously. No new policy updates from hub. Compliance status goes stale on hub.

"Can my site run independently?" → Yes, for existing config.

What the demo shows: NetworkPolicy partition simulation (Module 6) — blocks pod egress, not real WAN loss.
What the customer needs: Explicit assurance that klusterlet + broker continue operating during hub unreachability.
Pre-demo action: Ask about WAN reliability. If intermittent (overnight batch, routing failures), emphasize store-and-forward and klusterlet autonomy. If air-gapped, that is a different conversation (disconnected registry, etc.).
Workshop reference: Module 6 (disconnected behavior note)

Concern 5: Enterprise identity integration (AD/LDAP, not Keycloak)

The question: "We use Active Directory. Do we need Keycloak?"

IdP Status in demo Production path

Keycloak (OIDC)

Shown in lab

Works but adds a component customers may not want

Active Directory (LDAP)

Not shown

AMQ Broker LDAPLoginModule supports direct AD authentication — documented in AMQ 7.14 with explicit Microsoft AD example

Kerberos/GSSAPI

Not shown

AMQ Broker supports Krb5LoginModule + LDAPLoginModule chain

What the demo shows: Keycloak realm artemis-keycloak with OIDC clients.
What the customer needs: Assurance that Keycloak is optional. The same JAAS login.config mechanism supports LDAPLoginModule for direct AD auth, pushed via ACM ConfigurationPolicy.
Pre-demo action: Ask about IdP early. If AD/LDAP, preface the Keycloak sections with "this lab uses Keycloak for convenience; production deployments typically use LDAPLoginModule directly against your existing directory."

Pre-demo qualification checklist

Before running the demo for an enterprise customer, gather:

# Question Why it matters

1

Site count: _

Determines Mode 1 vs Mode 2 guidance

2

Edge hardware specs: CPU / RAM / storage / BMC make+model

Determines SNO feasibility

3

WAN connectivity pattern: Always-on / intermittent / air-gapped

Determines disconnected talking points

4

Identity provider: AD/LDAP / Okta / Keycloak / other

Determines auth discussion

5

Current messaging: AMQ / Kafka / RabbitMQ / other

Determines migration path discussion

6

What varies between sites: Address namespace only / full config / nothing

Determines parameterization discussion

7

Existing Red Hat products: RHEL / OpenShift / AMQ / RHACM

Determines starting point

If the customer already runs AMQ Broker on RHEL, see Migration Path: AMQ-on-RHEL to AMQ-on-SNO for the incremental migration pattern.
